Attackers target SMEs because they expect weaker defences. We put layered, monitored protection around your email and devices, then help you prove it with Cyber Essentials.
Cyber security for a small business is the combination of tools, settings and staff habits that stop criminals accessing your systems, stealing data or holding files to ransom. Effective protection uses several layers, including email filtering, endpoint detection and response, multi-factor authentication, prompt updates and tested backups, so a single mistake doesn’t become a business-stopping incident.
The UK Government’s annual Cyber Security Breaches Survey consistently finds phishing emails are the most common attack reported by UK businesses. Antivirus was designed for a different era of threat and isn’t enough on its own any more.
Viruses, worms and trojans still exist, but the attacks costing UK businesses money today look very different.
Convincing fake login pages that capture staff passwords for Microsoft 365.
Criminals take over a mailbox and quietly send fake invoices or change bank details.
Files and servers encrypted, followed by a demand for payment to unlock them.
Reused or leaked passwords used to access cloud systems without MFA.
Out-of-date software and firewalls exploited automatically by attack tools.
Laptops and phones holding company data left unencrypted.
| Layer | What it does |
|---|---|
| Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) | Behaviour-based protection on every laptop, desktop and server that detects suspicious activity, isolates the device and alerts our engineers. [CONFIRM: EDR product] |
| Barracuda Email Security | Stops spam, phishing links and malicious attachments before they reach inboxes, with protection against impersonation. [CONFIRM: Barracuda tier] |
| Multi-Factor Authentication | MFA across Microsoft 365 and remote access, with sensible policies that keep sign-ins simple for staff. |
| Firewall & Perimeter Security | Business-grade firewalls configured, updated and monitored, including secure remote access. [CONFIRM: firewall brand] |
| Patch & Vulnerability Management | Operating system and application updates applied on a schedule, with reporting. |
| Staff Awareness | Practical guidance so your team recognises phishing and knows how to report it. [CONFIRM: training offered?] |
Cyber Essentials is a UK Government-backed certification scheme that shows your business has basic protections in place against the most common cyber attacks. Many public sector contracts and supply chains ask for it. We audit your systems against each of the five controls, fix the gaps and prepare you for assessment. [CONFIRM: certification body or external assessor]
| Traditional antivirus | Endpoint detection & response (EDR) |
|---|---|
| Looks for known malware signatures | Watches behaviour to catch new and unknown attacks |
| Blocks files it recognises | Detects suspicious activity like mass file encryption |
| Little visibility after an alert | Records what happened for investigation |
| Relies on the user noticing a warning | Alerts our engineers directly |
| Can’t isolate an infected device | Can cut a device off the network in seconds |

EDR (endpoint detection and response) monitors how programs behave on a device, so it can detect and stop new attacks such as ransomware even when there is no known signature. Traditional antivirus mainly blocks files it already recognises.
Cyber Essentials is required for many government contracts involving personal data and is increasingly requested by larger customers and insurers. Even when it isn't required, working through the five controls closes the gaps most attacks rely on.
Multi-factor authentication asks for a second proof of identity, usually an app notification, when someone signs in. With sensible settings, staff are only prompted occasionally, such as on a new device, while stolen passwords become useless to attackers.
Barracuda email security scans incoming email for spam, malicious links, dangerous attachments and impersonation attempts, then blocks or quarantines threats before they reach your staff.
